Job Overview
We are seeking a skilled Tooling Engineer to join our energetic team and contribute to the fabrication of high-quality plastic components. This role is to support the Process Engineers by providing new molds that are robust. When there is an issue, the Tooling Engineer helps the Process Engineer by trouble shooting and also making sure we meet launch deadlines. The ideal candidate will be passionate about manufacturing and eager to develop their skills in a fast-paced environment. This is a 1st shift role (Roughly 7am-3pm).

What Success Looks Like
The tooling engineer is responsible for identifying the proper tool shop necessary for new mold construction and creating a detailed evaluation of each mold upon delivery per the Stone Plastics mold standards. The tooling engineer also coordinates and obtains cost and timing quotes for all engineering changes, verifying that they are completed correctly and on time, and closes the communication loop by conveying this information to the Program Managers.

The tooling engineer delivers molds and processes that are production ready through participation in mold trials and assistance with troubleshooting and debugging efforts. It is the tooling engineers responsibility to communicate the status of new mold construction and all engineering changes to the organization and use technical knowledge to solve injection molding problems. The tooling engineer is responsible for participating in part design feasibility reviews and providing estimated costs for new molds, when necessary. The tooling engineer will then oversee mold design reviews - including all required documentation - and follow up with the tool shop for all requested design changes to make sure they are implemented into the final mold design.

  • Proficient in Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, and the ability and willingness to learn new software applications.
  • Experience with tooling skilled trades/apprenticeship programs in Michigan
  • Project Management experience
  • Technical education - degree, or journeyman’s certification
  • Proficient with 3D CAD design software with an emphasis in mold design
  • Four year college technical degree or 5+ years project engineering experience working at a tool shop
